Petaluma, CA—StumpNMud Records is excited to announce the criminally overdue memoir of
Lester Chambers of The Chambers Brothers. Entitled, Time Has Come: Revelations of a
Mississippi Hippie, the book follows Lester’s whirlwind life, from his birth on a Mississippi
cotton plantation into a musical family steeped in the musical orchestrations of the Black Baptist
Church.
Though their sound was honed in the Echo Hills of Mississippi, under cover of darkness, the
Brothers had to flee from their family’s sharecropping situation which was governed by a Grand
Dragon of the local KKK.
After landing in California, the Brothers signed a recording contract with a major label, and,
despite creating some of the sweetest harmonies in Pop music history, as well as charting with
their mega-hit, Time Has Come Today, soon found that they were still sharecropping again—for
the label. Through Lester’s lens, this story details the mercurial rise of the Chambers Brothers
and the decision by Lester to go it alone.
Glimpses of larger-than-culture figures like Jimmy Reed, Miles Davis, his ex-wife Betty Davis,
John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Augustus Owsley Stanley III, Bob Dylan, Sonny Terry & Brownie
McGhee, and a host of others spring from the pages that span Lester’s career.
Revisit the hardships; recurring illnesses, the 2013 festival where he was attacked on stage,
recovering, returning to performing and working into his 80s, and the accolades commensurate
with the release of the 2022 Grammy-winning documentary, Summer of Soul, in which the
Chambers Brothers opened and closed out.
Time Has Come: Revelations of a Mississippi Hippie will be available in paperback and e-
book formats when it is released on September 15, 2022. An audiobook will follow. Order at
